Five Simple Ways Reduce Sugar in Your Kids’ Diet

Consuming lots of sugar is one of the worst things you can do to your body, right? While many people enjoy treats, beverages, and snacks loaded with sugar, have you ever considered how harmful this ingredient really is?

Based on numerous scientific claims, it can cause diabetes type 2, cancer, heart disease, and tooth decay. These days, a lot of parents are feeding their kids plenty of sugar, without considering what kind of affect it will have on their health.

So, instead of stuffing your kid with processed ingredients, you could make homemade meals richer in vitamins and minerals, instead of resorting to store-bought food.  You can always pack a container of fresh fruits and veggies in your designer diaper bag on clearance and take healthy meals anywhere you go.

Start reading labels

Understanding Food LabelsDid you know that similar products have different amounts of sugar?  For example, oatmeal, the one with the flavor, cereals, granola bars, muffins, and yogurt, are excellent examples. You can continue purchasing these products since they are kids’ favorites; however, you can change the brand if you find one with less sugar.

Bake

If your children love eating cookies, then there is no reason to restrict these delicious treats. Moreover, baking at home allows you to control the amount of sugar or even replace it with a healthy option. For instance, how often do you add high fructose corn syrup to your homemade cookies, let’s us guess, never?

You would be surprised how many recipes you can find online which contain this ingredient, and it’s a great option if you want to avoid adding sugar to your baked goodies. Alternatively, you could use stevia.

Eliminate sugary beverages

Well, we get it it’s challenging to keep your kids away from carbonated drinks, but for their benefit, you should avoid them altogether. There is no reason to buy sugar added juices or sugar-sweetened beverages since they are high in sugars and preservatives.

Instead, you can make your own juices, which are much healthier, such as lemonade, or orange juice, or pineapple smoothies. We believe your kids will love them, especially if you make some interesting arrangements, for example, serving pineapple juice in an actual pineapple.

decrease consumption of beverages

Plan meals and snacks

When you plan meals and snacks, the urgent feeling of finding something to eat is eliminated. For example, if you plan almonds and mangos for breakfast, then you will have almonds and mangos for breakfast. On the other hand, if you don’t plan, then vending machines and fast food becomes your best friend.

However, when it comes to your kids, try making a weekly menu. This will help you stay organized and on track.

Count sugar

Many studies confirm that people will eat better by simply tracking their food intake. While you don’t have to decide to eat better, you can choose to track the food you consume. Nowadays, you can use many apps that make this task super easy and allow you to monitor your caloric intake.
